When We Fell In Love

This story takes place from 1977 to 1983. I met my husband in early 1977, when I was a young 16 year old girl. My husband was 18, and the first time we actually met was at this posh birthday party. I was singing & dancing to ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” and I saw him standing there. I admit, I found him cute.

1220f3639b005bd36d27196a87b548f3After I danced, I got a glass of water and my future husband walked over to me and said a simple “Hi,” before he introduced himself.

He shook my hand as I introduced myself to him. We were nervous initially, but soon, we relaxed. We talked about things we liked, hobbies, family. Then, what really made us “click” is that we are both Christians, and love the Lord Jesus Christ most. Then, we discovered that we both love the music of ABBA, and we both played guitar! We both love to sing and dance, and our families are large.

His parents instantly loved me, and my family loved him too! So that was good, we had families who got on!

Soon, he asked me out, and our dates didn’t have to be extravagant for us to have fun. One night, I was staying with my Uncle & Auntie (They’re not really related to me, they’re just these family friends whom I love, because they were so lovely to me, and they were the ones who’d look after me if anything ever happened to my mom) when we went on a date to see ”ABBA – The Movie”. Of course they, and his parents told us we had to come back right after the movie was over.

We had a wonderful time, and we sang ABBA songs in his car – with him singing the male parts, me singing the female parts, and singing together when ABBA did! That was always most fun, we do it like this to this very day!

Shortly afterwards, I was at his house while we watched some ABBA specials we taped. Then, the pretty romance song “Honey, Honey” came on. We sang and danced to this song, and as the song was fading we shared our first kiss. That’s when “Honey, Honey” became “our song”. At that moment, we knew we were right for each other. We somehow knew that we were going to to spend the rest of our lives together. And here we are!

We told each other that night that we love each other. We knew this was right. But we knew to wait. We were very attracted to each other but our faith in God was stronger, and of course it still is. We never went any further than kissing, hugging and holding hands. We knew God forbids sex outside of marriage, so as much in love as we were, we never touched each other in a sexual way. I always dressed well, but modestly, and so did he. We knew it would be worth it in the end.

We spent a lot of time at each other’s homes singing and dancing to ABBA as one of our favorite pastimes. Our families, when they heard us singing they said that that we made great harmonies! I was flattered, but I knew we’d never be as good as ABBA, in terms of music.

In December 1981 I was up in Norway, performing a song, before going to Oslo and we were inside the Arctic Circle, so we were able to see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights!)

Then, after the song, he appeared all of a sudden, and he came on the stage. He took my hand and got down on one knee and I heard those words,

“Will you marry me?”

He barely finished asking when I said: YES! He lifted me up and twirled me about before putting the ring on my finger and kissing me. The people cheered, and there are pictures from that moment too! He knows how to be a romantic – he proposed to me right under the Northern Lights! Praise God for the beauty!

My fiance and I celebrated our engagement when we got back, but our wedding was the “high-key” event.

By 1983, we’d planned our wedding and we sure were excited! It was a church wedding with lots of friends and family attending. It was so beautiful!

We remained virgins until our wedding night, and it most certainly was worth it. I always know that God wants what’s best for us, and his laws are for our own good. I believe it’s because we waited, that we have had a great sex life for the last 30 years. Our wedding night was so beautiful, and our desire for each other is far from wearing thin. And I think that’s not only because we waited, but also because our love for God and each other.

We still feel the same way about each other, I mean we certainly found each other, and have no regrets. I love him and I always will. God bless you all!
